The Jennifer A. Kay Foundation is 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to promoting and improving the math and science education of young women. It was established in memory of Jennifer Ann Kay, who taught high school mathematics in Bayonne, New Jersey and Jersey City, New Jersey prior to her death in 2006 at 42 years old. Jennifer had left a successful career in the computer industry in order to dedicate herself to teaching math to young women. The Jennifer A. Kay Foundation's purpose is the same as the purpose Jennifer adopted: to promote and improve the education of young women in math and science.
Our goal is to make math and science an enjoyable and engaging topic for all young women. We therefore do not focus exclusively on supporting "star" pupils, or on encouraging young women to pursue careers in math or science. If some of the young women who benefit from Foundation funds do choose math- or science-related careers, we are of course delighted, but our focus is more on improving the math and science educational experience for all girls. We think of it like sports: people encourage young people to participate in sports not only when there's a good chance the players will end up pursuing professional careers in the sport, because sports teach certain abilities and values. Good math and science classes do the same thing. They teach skills and values - for example, analysis, abstract thinking, discipline, tenacity, and creativity in problem-solving - that have life-long value for a woman, regardless of her profession. Also, removing the intimidation factor that exists for many young women when they confront math and science can boost their self-confidence.
